Gabriel Bortoleto expects Audi to face another painful launch phase at the Canadian Grand Prix after both team cars dropped four positions at the sprint start in Montreal.
The Brazilian is not hiding from the problem. His view is blunt. Unless he produces a huge getaway, and several rivals stumble at the same time, he expects to lose ground when the lights go out.
That matters because the start is one of the few moments in Formula 1 where a driver can lose a race before the first sector is complete. It is also one of the hardest areas to fix quickly.
A start is not just about reaction time. The driver must release the clutch, control wheelspin, keep the engine in the right power window, and place the car before Turn 1. The team must also give him hardware and software that make that job repeatable.
In Montreal, Audi has already had one warning. Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg each lost four places at the beginning of the sprint. That is a heavy price in any race. It is worse in a tightly packed midfield, where track position can define the entire afternoon.
Bortoleto pushed back on the idea that the situation should cause alarm. But the pattern is uncomfortable for Audi because the team is still early in life with its own Formula 1 power unit.
A power unit in modern F1 is not only an engine. It includes the combustion engine, turbo, hybrid systems, battery, control electronics and deployment strategy. All of those parts affect how cleanly a car launches from the grid.
If the car struggles to put power down, the driver can be exposed. If the clutch bite is difficult to judge, the getaway can become inconsistent. If the torque delivery is not smooth, rivals can jump ahead before the first braking zone.
None of that proves Audi has a major technical flaw. One sprint start does not decide a season. But two cars losing the same number of places at the same start makes the topic harder to dismiss.
For Bortoleto, the practical problem is simple. If he loses places at lights out, his race becomes reactive. He has to recover through tyre management, strategy, overtaking and safety car timing instead of building from his grid position.
That is a poor trade for any young driver. It is especially difficult in a midfield fight, where small gaps often separate several teams.
A clean launch gives a driver options. He can choose an attacking line into Turn 1, cover rivals, or settle into clear air. A poor launch removes those choices. The driver must defend, avoid contact, and hope the first-lap traffic opens a route back.
Bortoleto’s own phrasing shows how narrow he thinks the margin is. He is not talking about gaining a little through normal execution. He is talking about needing an exceptional start while others get it wrong.
That is not a comfortable position for a team preparing for a grand prix start.
Hulkenberg’s sprint loss adds another layer. This was not only a rookie problem. Hulkenberg is one of the most experienced drivers on the grid, and his four-place drop suggests the team must look beyond individual launch technique.
That does not remove driver responsibility. Starts are still partly about feel. Drivers spend practice sessions rehearsing clutch maps, bite points and throttle response. They also work with engineers to understand grip on the racing line and on the dirtier side of the grid.
But when both cars lose the same amount, the team must examine the common factors. That includes clutch behaviour, launch settings, tyre preparation, engine delivery and procedure.
Montreal can magnify the damage because the first lap rewards confidence and clean positioning. Once cars settle into a train, recovery depends on pace, tyre life and the ability to pressure rivals into mistakes.
The sprint result therefore becomes more than a short-format frustration. It becomes useful data for race day.
Audi must decide whether it can adjust launch settings before the grand prix. The drivers must decide how aggressive they can be without creating wheelspin or risking contact. Engineers must judge whether the sprint start was an outlier or a repeatable weakness.
The team also has to manage the message. Publicly, Bortoleto says it is not worrying. That is understandable. Drivers rarely want to signal panic, and teams do not benefit from advertising a weakness before the main race.
Inside the garage, the tone will be more practical. The question is not whether the problem sounds worrying. The question is whether the cars can leave the grid without giving away positions again.
