McLaren’s Canadian Grand Prix deficit to Mercedes has a clear technical clue: shorter gear ratios.

That choice is showing up around Montreal, where Lando Norris fell 0.151 seconds short of George Russell’s pole-sitting Mercedes. The gap was small on the stopwatch, but revealing in how the two cars built speed around the lap.

McLaren and Mercedes share the same power unit. They do not share the same gearbox design. That matters because McLaren builds its own gearbox, while Mercedes runs its works package.

The difference means McLaren has more freedom over the gearing choices inside its car. This season, it has gone slightly shorter than Mercedes.

In simple terms, shorter gearing helps a car accelerate harder. The engine climbs through the rev range more quickly, so the driver shifts up sooner. The car can feel punchier when leaving slower corners.

The trade-off comes later on long straights. A car with shorter gearing can run out of ideal pull earlier, especially in top gear. That can hurt maximum speed or reduce efficiency when the track demands sustained acceleration.

Montreal is a sharp test for that compromise. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve rewards braking confidence, traction and kerb use. It also has long bursts of full throttle, especially from the Turn 10 hairpin to the final chicane.

That run is one of the most important parts of the lap. Drivers launch from a slow hairpin, unwind the steering, then stay flat towards the last braking zone. Any gearing difference becomes easier to spot there.

During the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, McLaren drivers were reaching one gear higher than Mercedes drivers at three points around the lap. They were also shifting earlier during acceleration phases.

That pattern points directly to shorter ratios. It helps explain why McLaren could gain in some acceleration zones, yet lose time on the longest runs.

Norris’s qualifying deficit to Russell was only 0.151 seconds. At this level, that is not one mistake or one simple weakness. It is the sum of many small gains and losses.

The long acceleration from Turn 10 towards the final chicane was one area where Mercedes appeared better placed. A slightly longer eighth gear gives the car more breathing room at high speed.

McLaren’s choice is not automatically wrong. It is a different compromise.

Andrea Stella has acknowledged that McLaren sits on the shorter side compared with Mercedes. His explanation was straightforward: the ratio choice brings pros and cons, depending on the part of the lap.

The advantage can appear when the car leaves slower corners. It may also help at the start, where launch and early acceleration are critical. Those moments can decide track position before strategy even begins.

The disadvantage can appear on tracks with long straights. Montreal exposes that clearly. So will any circuit where top-end speed and energy deployment matter heavily.

This is why gear ratios are never just an engineering footnote. They influence how a car behaves in traffic, how it attacks qualifying laps and how it defends during a race.

They can also affect energy recovery strategy. Formula 1 hybrid cars do not simply burn fuel down the straight. They harvest and deploy electrical energy across the lap.

A different gearing profile changes where the engine operates most efficiently. It can also change how the team balances electrical boost, battery recovery and straight-line performance.

The effect may be subtle, but subtle is enough in modern F1. When pole is decided by a tenth and a half, every shift point matters.

McLaren’s position is especially interesting because it uses the Mercedes power unit. Fans often assume customer teams are locked into the same performance traits as the engine supplier.

That is not true here. McLaren designs and produces its own gearbox. That gives it freedom to make a different call from Mercedes on ratios.

Other Mercedes-powered teams do not have quite the same room. Alpine and Williams use Mercedes gearboxes, which ties them more closely to the works team’s ratio choices or previous options.

That makes McLaren’s situation unusual among Mercedes customers. It can chase its own concept, even while using the same engine.

The key point is that the ratio decision was made before the season. Forward gear ratios must be nominated at the start of the year and then stay fixed.

The 2026 rules do allow one change to gear ratios and final drive. Teams often call this kind of allowance a joker, because it gives them one chance to correct or redirect the specification.

McLaren does not plan to use that option for now. Stella says the team is happy with its current choice and believes the benefits elsewhere still outweigh the losses on the longest straights.

That tells us something important about McLaren’s season view. The team is not judging the car only by Montreal. It sees value across different circuits, conditions and phases of a race weekend.

A car that accelerates well can be dangerous at tracks with slower exits and shorter straights. It can also help in wheel-to-wheel moments, especially when a driver needs immediate response out of a corner.

But the Canadian weekend gives Mercedes a useful reference point. Russell’s pole was not just a driver result. It also showed how the Mercedes package can use its gearing advantage at a power-sensitive venue.

For Norris and McLaren, the gap will be frustrating because it was so small. Yet the explanation is not a simple lack of engine power. It is a setup direction built into the car’s hardware choice.

That nuance matters for the championship fight. If McLaren keeps this gearing, it may remain sharper in some traction zones. Mercedes may retain a cleaner profile on certain long straights.

The balance could swing from weekend to weekend. A street circuit with repeated slow exits may flatter McLaren. A layout with long full-throttle sections may pull the advantage back towards Mercedes.

This also shapes race strategy. Straight-line speed affects overtaking and defending, especially with DRS. If Mercedes has better reach at the end of long straights, it can be harder to attack and easier to protect track position.

McLaren can still fight through tyre life, corner speed and launch performance. Shorter gearing may help the car punch out of slow corners, which can protect tyres if the driver avoids sliding.

But there is no free lap time in F1. Every strength carries a cost somewhere else.

Montreal has simply made that cost visible. Mercedes had the better answer over the decisive parts of qualifying, while McLaren’s choice still carries logic for the wider calendar.

The important detail is that McLaren is not treating the ratios as a mistake. It sees them as part of its 2026 identity.

That makes the next few race weekends more revealing. If McLaren remains close on power-sensitive tracks, its compromise will look robust. If Mercedes repeatedly stretches away at the end of long straights, the pressure to reconsider will grow.

For now, the Canadian Grand Prix has given fans a rare look at a hidden F1 battle. Two cars can share an engine and still deliver lap time in very different ways.
