Formula 1’s Canadian Grand Prix could become one of the most difficult races of the season if Sunday’s rain forecast holds.

Drivers are not worried only about standing water. Their bigger concern is tyre temperature. At Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, that problem can decide who races and who simply survives.

Rain is expected to arrive in Montreal early on Sunday morning. The forecast points to mist and light rain through the morning and into the early afternoon.

The rain may ease near race time, but that may not solve the problem. Temperatures around 11C could stop the track from drying quickly.

That matters because modern F1 tyres need heat to grip. When they fall below their working range, the car slides, brakes lock, and drivers lose confidence fast.

Pierre Gasly has warned that the race could become an “elimination game” if those conditions arrive. His view carries extra weight because he recently tested wet tyres for Pirelli after the Miami Grand Prix.

Gasly’s point is simple. Montreal is already a tricky place to warm tyres in the dry. In the wet, with low temperatures, that task becomes far harder.

Max Verstappen has made the same concern clear. He said drivers already struggle to switch on slick tyres at the right moment. On wet tyres, he expects the challenge to grow for everyone.

That is the central issue for Sunday. This may not be a classic wet race where the fastest driver simply finds grip. It could be a race where keeping rubber alive matters more than raw pace.

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve creates that problem by design. It has long straights, heavy braking zones and relatively few long, fast corners.

Fast corners usually help drivers load the tyre and build heat. Montreal does not offer much of that. The track surface also has low grip, so cars can slide before the tyres are ready.

The straights then cool the tyres again. That creates a cycle where drivers push for temperature, lose it on the next straight, then arrive at the braking zone with little trust in the car.

That is why the weather has worried the paddock. A damp track at 11C can be more awkward than a wetter track at warmer temperatures.

The tyre choice may also become unusual. In recent F1 seasons, the intermediate tyre has usually been the obvious pick in light or moderate rain.

Intermediates sit between slicks and full wets. They clear some water but still behave more like a racing tyre on a damp track.

Full wets have deeper grooves. They clear more water, but they often feel slow when the track is not properly wet.

For years, drivers have treated full wets almost like safety-car tyres. If the track was wet enough to need them, visibility often became too poor to race.

Canada could challenge that habit. Pirelli believes the full wet may work better than the intermediate if the rain and cold combine in the wrong way.

Pirelli chief engineer Simone Berra has described the situation as a difficult mix of low temperatures and a low-energy circuit. He said the tyres were not designed around such cold conditions.

The full wet may have one advantage. Its deeper tread means more rubber mass, which can help it hold temperature.

It also has a softer compound and a lower operating window. In plain terms, it may begin working at a lower temperature than the intermediate.

That does not mean the full wet will be easy. It means the intermediate could become too cold to trust if the track is damp but not energetic enough.

This is where strategy gets uncomfortable. Teams usually prefer the intermediate because it is faster once the track begins drying.

But if the intermediate cannot stay warm, it can become slower and riskier than the full wet. Drivers may then need a tyre that looks conservative but actually gives them more control.

Pit walls will face a moving target. The first laps after a stop may feel acceptable if the tyre leaves the blankets warm.

After that, the circuit decides everything. If the car cannot generate heat, the tyre temperature drops and the grip disappears.

That also limits how much tyre blankets can help. Teams can heat wet-weather tyres before fitting them, but they cannot carry that heat forever.

Pirelli’s view is that the Canadian problem is not only about getting tyres warm. It is about keeping them warm once the car is running.

That distinction matters for race control too. A safety car can reduce accident risk by slowing the field.

But it can also cool the tyres further. Slower laps mean less energy through the rubber. When racing resumes, drivers may face even less grip than before.

Verstappen has suggested a virtual safety car could sometimes help more. Under a VSC, drivers slow down, but they may still keep more speed at certain parts of the lap.

A full safety car bunches the field and reduces pace more heavily. In these conditions, that can make tyre temperatures fall at the worst time.

The FIA will therefore face a difficult balance. It must protect drivers from poor visibility and low grip, while avoiding long slow periods that make the tyres colder.

Carlos Sainz, a Grand Prix Drivers’ Association director, expects the FIA to be careful. He has asked fans and media not to push too hard if race control delays action or manages the start cautiously.

Sainz’s message reflects a wider driver concern. This is an early real test for these cars in cold, wet race conditions.

The wet and intermediate tyres have not had years of development around this exact package. That makes the margin smaller for drivers and officials.

For fans, the key detail is patience. A delayed start or safety-car opening may frustrate viewers, especially at a popular old-school circuit.

But cold wet tyres can create accidents before a race has properly begun. Race control may decide that a slow start is better than losing cars immediately.

If the race runs in these conditions, the sporting impact could be big. Qualifying position may matter less if drivers cannot bring tyres in cleanly.

Cars that usually protect tyres well may gain. Drivers with strong wet-weather feel may also find chances, but only if they avoid overdriving.

Montreal already punishes mistakes. The walls sit close, and heavy braking zones invite lock-ups. Wet tyres below temperature would make every small error more expensive.

Teams also need to think about championship risk. A podium chance can vanish with one cold brake lock-up or one poor restart.

That may push some drivers into caution and others into opportunity. Midfield teams, especially, could gamble if the race becomes unstable.

The full wet versus intermediate call may define the afternoon. If Pirelli’s warning proves right, the brave choice may not be the tyre that looks fastest on paper.

The Canadian Grand Prix often rewards commitment. This year, if the forecast stays wet and cold, it may reward restraint first.

Sunday’s race could still dry enough to avoid the worst of it. But if the mist hangs over the circuit and the asphalt stays cold, F1 may get a very different Canadian Grand Prix.

Not a simple rain race. A tyre-temperature race, where grip is fragile, race control has little room, and survival may shape the result.
