Formula 1’s Canadian Grand Prix could turn on tyre temperature rather than engine power if rain hits Montreal on Sunday.
After two warm and dry days at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, drivers now face a very different race. Persistent light rain is forecast through Sunday, with temperatures expected to drop sharply.
That matters because modern F1 cars need tyre temperature to make grip. Cold rubber slides more easily. In wet conditions, that can turn braking zones, kerbs and traction zones into a constant risk.
The concern in the paddock is clear. Drivers are not mainly worried about how the power units deliver energy. They are worried about whether the wet-weather tyres will come alive at all.
Lando Norris called the race potentially “insanely tricky”. His point was simple. If drivers already struggle to warm up a soft slick tyre, they will have a harder job with intermediates or full wets in colder conditions.
Intermediates are used when the track is damp but not flooded. Full wet tyres are for heavier standing water. Both have tread grooves to clear water, unlike slick tyres, which only work properly on a dry surface.
But tread does not solve everything. The tyre still needs heat. Without it, the car feels nervous, the front tyres refuse to bite, and the rear can snap away under throttle.
George Russell, who starts from pole position, also sees tyres as the central challenge. He noted that the FIA has already acted on power delivery for these low-grip situations.
The governing body reduced the battery deployment limit in wet conditions from 350 kilowatts to 250 kilowatts. That should make the cars less aggressive when drivers accelerate out of slow corners.
Even so, Russell said drivers still have a huge amount of horsepower under their right foot. His view is that power will remain manageable compared with the bigger issue of tyre temperature.
That is especially important because Montreal may only reach about 12 or 13 degrees Celsius on race day. For F1 tyres, that is cold. For wet tyres, it can mean several laps of sliding before the rubber reaches a useful window.
Russell summed up the trade-off well. The race may not feel pleasant from inside the cockpit, but the challenge is the same for everyone.
That last point is important. A wet Canadian Grand Prix will not simply reward the fastest car over one lap. It will reward the driver and team that read grip levels quickest, avoid panic, and choose the right tyre at the right time.
Montreal already punishes mistakes. The track uses public roads and has close walls, heavy braking zones and traction demands out of slow corners. When the surface is cold and wet, those features become sharper.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli also underlined that tyre warm-up is difficult at this venue even in the dry. He said the first few laps can be the hardest, because the tyre is not yet working and the car slides around.
That creates a classic wet-race problem. Drivers need to push to build tyre temperature. But pushing too early can cause a spin, a lock-up or a crash. The risk is highest immediately after the start, after safety cars, and after pit stops.
The field has limited real evidence with this generation of cars in wet race conditions. Every official track session this season has been dry so far. Miami saw only a brief light shower, and drivers stayed on slick tyres.
That leaves teams working from tests, simulations and driver feel. Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc both had spins in Miami, which showed how quickly grip can disappear when the surface changes.
Still, the drivers’ focus has shifted away from the power units. The revised wet-weather energy rules should calm the cars slightly. The bigger question is whether the Pirelli wet compounds can generate enough heat in Canadian conditions.
Strategy could become unstable as a result. If rain stays light, teams may prefer intermediates because they are quicker than full wets on a damp track. If water builds, the full wet becomes safer because it clears more water.
The difficult part is timing the switch. Stop too early for intermediates and the car may aquaplane. Wait too long on full wets and lap time disappears as the tread overheats or the track dries.
Aquaplaning happens when the tyre rides on top of water instead of cutting through it. At that point, the driver has little control. Steering, braking and throttle inputs become far less effective.
Antonelli mentioned aquaplaning moments from previous wet running at Montreal. That warning should matter to the pit wall. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has long straights, heavy braking points and painted kerbs, all of which can expose a cold tyre.
Race control will also change the rules for adjustable bodywork if the track is wet. Drivers will have fewer chances to lower their rear wings on the straights.
The Straight Mode zone approaching the Turn 4 hairpin will be deactivated in wet conditions. The remaining three zones will also be shortened.
That will affect overtaking. Lowering the rear wing reduces drag and helps straight-line speed. With fewer opportunities to use it, passing may rely more on traction, braking confidence and tyre condition.
For Russell, pole position gives control of the start, but it does not remove the danger. The leader reaches the first braking zone with limited grip information. He also becomes the reference point for everyone behind.
For Norris and the chasing pack, the opening laps may offer opportunity. If the leader cannot build tyre temperature quickly, pressure can arrive fast. But attacking in low grip brings its own punishment.
The championship impact could be significant because wet races often flatten the form order. A team with slightly less dry pace can gain if it heats the tyres better, calls the stops cleaner, or keeps its drivers out of trouble.
For Indian fans watching from afar, this is the type of Grand Prix where the live timing matters almost as much as the television picture. Watch sector times after each stop. Watch who warms the tyre quickest. Watch who struggles after safety car restarts.
The forecast may still change. Antonelli pointed to Miami as a reminder that rain predictions do not always become wet racing. But teams must prepare as if the rain will arrive.
If it does, the Canadian Grand Prix will become a tyre management test under pressure. The fastest driver may not be the one with the most power. It may be the one who finds grip first and keeps the car away from the walls.
