The 2026 Canadian Grand Prix is on course for a wet and wind-hit race day in Montreal.
As of 07:45 local time on Sunday, May 24, the forecast carried a 90 percent chance of rain. That gives teams little room to treat the weather as a passing nuisance. It is now central to the race plan.
The grand prix is scheduled to start at 16:00 local time. By then, conditions are expected to improve from the heavy morning rain. But the available forecast still points to enough water and wind to disrupt the race.
That matters at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Montreal can already be unforgiving in dry conditions. Add standing water, cool air and gusting wind, and a race built around rhythm can quickly become a survival test.
A large rain cell was moving across Montreal on Sunday morning. The worst of that system was expected before the race start. Yet the track may not dry cleanly, especially if temperatures stay low and showers continue in patches.
The air temperature forecast sits between 10 and 13 degrees Celsius. That is cold for Formula 1 tyres. It makes warm-up harder and reduces grip, particularly after Safety Car periods, slow laps or pit stops.
Pirelli has already advised teams and drivers to use the full wet tyre. That is the most aggressive rain tyre in the Formula 1 range. It can clear much more water than the intermediate, but it is slower once the track begins to dry.
That choice tells the paddock something important. This is not just a damp start with spray. The combination of rain, cold air and the Montreal layout is serious enough for the full wet to be the safer baseline.
The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve does not have many long, high-speed corners. Those corners usually load the tyre and help generate temperature. Montreal is different. It is dominated by straights, heavy braking zones and chicanes.
That makes tyre warm-up more difficult in the wet. Drivers may struggle to build confidence on corner entry. Braking for the final chicane, the hairpin and Turn 1 could become especially tricky if the track is cold and patchy.
Wind adds another problem. Gusts could reach 50 kph and are expected to blow from west to east. Across the start-finish straight, that means a right-to-left crosswind for the drivers.
A crosswind on a straight can unsettle the car at high speed. It can also change the balance under braking, just when the driver needs the car to be predictable. In wet conditions, that margin shrinks further.

Race control will also have a major call to make before lights out. If visibility becomes too poor, the start procedure could be delayed or adjusted. In Formula 1, the issue is not only grip. It is whether drivers can see the car ahead.
Spray is often worse on circuits with long straights. Montreal has several of them. A following driver can lose sight of braking boards, kerbs and the car in front within seconds.
If the race begins behind the Safety Car, that would change strategy immediately. It would reduce early incident risk, but it would also delay tyre temperature build-up. Drivers would then face the first racing lap with tyres that may still feel cold.
Teams must prepare for several possible versions of the same race. One version starts wet and stays wet. Another begins on full wets, moves to intermediates, and then maybe dries enough for slick tyres. A third features repeated showers and no stable strategy window.
The hardest call will be the crossover point. That is the moment when one tyre type becomes faster than another. Full wets are best when there is heavy water. Intermediates work when the track is wet but no longer flooded.
Switch too early and a driver risks aquaplaning. That happens when the tyre rides on top of water instead of cutting through it. The driver can lose steering and braking with almost no warning.
Switch too late and the full wets overheat or wear quickly on a drying line. That costs lap time and can force another stop. In a close race, that mistake can decide the podium.
Montreal also punishes small errors. The walls sit close, and several exits leave little room for recovery. The famous final chicane has ended strong weekends before. In rain, the Wall of Champions becomes even more relevant.
The cool weather may also change how teams manage brakes. Canada is already one of the heavier braking races on the calendar. In cold and wet conditions, brake temperature can swing more sharply between straights and braking zones.
Drivers need enough brake heat to stop the car, but they cannot abuse the tyres while generating it. That balance will matter on formation laps, Safety Car restarts and laps after pit stops.

With full wets advised, cold air expected and strong crosswinds in play, the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix is set to test judgement as much as speed.
The fastest car may still win. But in Montreal on Sunday, the smartest race could matter just as much.
