McLaren believes the Canadian Grand Prix could become a serious test of Formula 1’s new 2026 power units if rain hits Montreal.

Andrea Stella has warned that wet conditions would add a layer of uncertainty McLaren has not yet experienced this season. The issue is not only grip. It is also how the new power units deliver usable energy when the driver cannot lean on the tyres with confidence.

That matters because the 2026 cars have changed the balance of performance. Drivers need clean inputs, stable throttle application and precise energy use to extract lap time. In the dry, teams already spend long debriefs working through power unit behaviour. In the wet, those questions become sharper.

Stella’s concern is simple. Some rivals have at least sampled the 2026 machinery in wet running. McLaren has not.

A handful of teams and drivers, including Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari, gained wet-weather experience during a Pirelli test at Fiorano in April. That does not guarantee an answer for Montreal. But it does offer a reference point.

McLaren arrives without that same wet baseline. Stella said teams that have tested in those conditions may know “a little bit more” about how the power unit behaves when the track is slippery.

For fans, this is the kind of hidden race-day variable that can turn a normal Grand Prix into a messy strategic fight. A wet race does not simply reduce cornering speed. It changes how drivers feed in the throttle, how tyres build temperature and how engineers manage energy deployment.

Montreal could exaggerate those problems.

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is fast in places, but it does not have the kind of long, high-speed corners that punish tyres into their operating range. In plain terms, the track does not naturally heat the rubber as much as some other circuits.

Stella pointed to that lack of high-speed cornering as a concern. He also highlighted the surface, which is among the smoothest on the calendar. Smooth asphalt can reduce tyre stress, but in cold or wet conditions it can make tyre warm-up harder.

That puts Pirelli’s wet tyres under scrutiny. Wet and intermediate tyres need temperature to work properly. If they run too cold, the car slides more. If the car slides more, the driver overheats patches of rubber without building stable grip. The result can be a car that feels nervous lap after lap.

The problem becomes more difficult when the weekend gives teams little real running. Stella noted that there have not been several sessions for Pirelli and the teams to calibrate around these conditions.

So McLaren’s concern is not panic. It is a recognition that the usual models may not be enough.

Modern F1 teams simulate everything they can. They model the track, the tyres, the power unit and the likely weather. But wet running often exposes the gap between prediction and reality. Water changes grip corner by corner. A drying line can appear quickly. Spray reduces visibility. Drivers change their inputs instinctively.

With the 2026 power units still relatively new in race conditions, that gap becomes more important.

The power unit question is especially sensitive because wet driving rewards smoothness. Too much torque at the wrong moment can break rear grip. A hesitant delivery can cost drive out of slow corners. The driver then loses time on the straights, where Montreal usually rewards strong traction.

That makes the relationship between driver and engine mapping critical. The engineer can adjust settings, but the driver still has to trust the response under their right foot.

For McLaren, the lack of wet experience creates a race execution challenge. The team must learn while competing. That means early laps could carry extra value. Installation laps, formation lap feel and the first proper racing laps may tell engineers more than simulations did.

If the rain arrives before the start, tyre choice becomes the first major call. If the track is fully wet, teams may need full wet tyres. If it is damp but improving, intermediates can be faster. But the wrong tyre at the wrong temperature can destroy a race in only a few laps.

That is why Stella’s tyre warning matters. The issue is not only which tyre to choose. It is whether the chosen tyre can reach its working window on this particular circuit.

Montreal has a history of punishing small mistakes. The walls sit close. Braking zones are heavy. Drivers need confidence on corner entry and traction on exit. In the wet, the famous stop-start rhythm becomes a test of patience as much as bravery.

A smooth power unit response can protect the tyres. A snappy one can make the rear of the car unstable. If the rear slides too often, tyre temperatures can spike unevenly while overall grip remains poor.

That is the kind of problem a driver feels immediately, but a team may need laps to solve.

The uncertainty also gives opportunity to rivals. Ferrari’s wet test with Hamilton at Fiorano does not replicate Montreal. No private test can recreate a Grand Prix, with traffic, spray and pressure. But any wet mileage with the new power unit gives engineers and drivers extra references.

That reference could help with engine maps, tyre warm-up expectations and driver confidence. In a dry race, the advantage may disappear. In a wet one, it could become meaningful.

The wider race context adds more intrigue. Mercedes is expected to bring a major upgrade package in Canada, while Max Verstappen is being discussed as a threat if his weekend runs cleanly. Those are separate performance storylines, but rain can compress the field and make execution more important than raw speed.

For McLaren, this is a test of adaptability. The team has to manage a car it does not fully know in these conditions, at a circuit that may not help the tyres come alive. That combination is uncomfortable for any front-running operation.

Still, wet races can reward disciplined teams. The best result may come from avoiding the dramatic mistake rather than chasing the boldest call. Clean communication, quick learning and calm driver feedback can matter as much as outright pace.

Stella’s warning should be read that way. He is not claiming McLaren cannot handle the race. He is flagging a real technical unknown before it becomes a Sunday problem.

If the Canadian Grand Prix stays dry, the concern may fade into the background. If it turns wet, the first stint could reveal which teams truly understand the 2026 package.

McLaren’s message is clear: Montreal may not just test speed. It may test how much each team really knows about Formula 1’s new era.
