Pirelli has warned Formula 1 teams that the full wet tyre could become the best weapon if heavy rain hits the Canadian Grand Prix.

That matters because modern F1 rarely races for long on the blue-walled wet tyre. Drivers often prefer intermediates, and race control usually stops the race if standing water makes visibility or grip too dangerous.

Montreal may challenge that habit on Sunday.

The Canadian Grand Prix is scheduled for a 16:00 local start at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. For Indian viewers, that means 1:30am IST on Monday.

Current forecasts point to heavy rain around race time. Pirelli also expects unusually cold conditions, with air temperature around 11 to 12 degrees Celsius. If rain falls, track temperature could sit close to the same level.

That combination creates a very specific tyre problem.

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a low-energy track. In simple terms, it does not put huge loads through the tyres for long periods. There are heavy braking zones and traction events, but fewer fast corners that constantly stress the rubber.

Usually, that can help tyre wear. In cold rain, it can hurt warm-up.

Formula 1 tyres need heat to work. If a tyre sits below its ideal temperature window, it cannot bite into the asphalt properly. The driver then loses grip, confidence and braking performance.

Intermediates sit between slicks and full wets. They suit damp tracks, light rain and conditions where a dry line may begin to appear. They can be very fast when the circuit is wet but not flooded.

Full wets are built for heavier rain. They clear more water and carry deeper grooves. They are slower on a merely damp track, but safer and more stable when water builds up.

Pirelli’s Simone Berra has suggested Montreal’s forecast could flip the usual order. In these very cold, wet conditions, he believes the full wet may work more naturally than the intermediate.

That is not just a safety call. It could be a performance call.

The key point is temperature. Berra explained that a tyre may eventually reach a steady state after several laps. But if it keeps losing heat and cannot recover, the driver gets trapped in a grip spiral.

The car slides more. Sliding cools or damages the tyre further. The driver then has to slow down, which makes it even harder to create heat.

That is why Pirelli sees the wet tyre as a serious race option in Montreal. Its working range may suit the cold rain better than the intermediate.

This would be a rare change in recent F1 thinking.

Over the past few seasons, drivers have treated full wets almost like an emergency tyre. They use them when conditions are extreme, then switch to intermediates as soon as they can. Teams know the intermediate is often faster once water levels drop.

But the Canadian Grand Prix has a recent example that will stay in every strategy room.

At the start of the 2024 race in Montreal, Haas fitted full wet tyres to Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg. The move worked in the opening phase, as both drivers gained significant ground while others struggled.

That moment did not make full wets fashionable again. It did show that the tyre can be the right answer when conditions line up.

The 2026 race may offer a similar puzzle.

If rain arrives before the start, teams must decide whether to prioritise early grip or long-term flexibility. Intermediates may tempt drivers who expect conditions to improve quickly. Full wets may appeal to teams worried about cold standing water and early safety car chaos.

The first lap at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve can already be awkward. The run to Turn 1 is short, the braking zone is tight, and cars often bunch up into Turn 2. In rain, visibility from spray becomes a major factor.

A driver with more initial grip can attack. A driver on the wrong tyre may spend the opening laps simply trying to keep the car straight.

The final sector also raises the stakes. Drivers brake hard for the last chicane, where the wall on exit punishes tiny errors. In cold rain, a small tyre temperature mistake can become a race-ending moment.

For front-running teams, the call may shape victory chances. For midfield teams, it may create a rare chance to jump the order.

A bold full wet start can work if the rain is heavy enough and the tyre stays alive. It can also backfire quickly if the track dries or the intermediate comes into range sooner than expected.

That is where communication will matter.

Drivers will ask about rain intensity, lap time gaps and track evolution. Engineers will compare sector times against rivals on different compounds. Strategists will watch for any dry patches, especially on braking lines.

The pit lane timing could decide the race as much as raw pace.

If teams start on full wets, the first switch to intermediates becomes the key crossover point. Pit too early, and the driver may aquaplane or fail to warm the tyre. Pit too late, and rivals on intermediates may take seconds per lap once conditions improve.

If teams start on intermediates, the first few laps become the danger zone. A driver who cannot generate heat may lose positions before the race settles.

Heavy rain in modern F1 brings more than tyre strategy. Visibility, water depth and recovery access all influence whether the race starts on time, begins behind the Safety Car, or faces a red flag.

The full wet tyre only matters if the field can actually race. If conditions become too severe, officials may neutralise the event until the circuit becomes manageable.

That creates frustration for fans, but it also reflects a hard truth. F1 cars produce massive spray, and drivers cannot race wheel-to-wheel if they cannot see braking boards or cars ahead.

Still, Pirelli’s message is clear. If the race remains green and the rain matches the forecast, teams should not dismiss the full wet as a last resort.

There is also a wider weekend context.

Mercedes is expected to bring a major upgrade package to Canada. Max Verstappen is also being watched as a threat if he puts together a clean weekend. A wet race could complicate both storylines.

Upgrades are harder to read in rain because tyre temperature and driver confidence can hide the car’s true pace. A smooth wet setup may matter more than a new part’s theoretical gain.

For Verstappen and other elite wet-weather drivers, changing grip levels can open opportunities. But even the best drivers need a tyre that switches on.

That is what makes this Canadian Grand Prix interesting before the lights even go out.

The strategic question is simple for fans. Is the track wet enough and cold enough for full wets to beat intermediates?

If the answer is yes, the blue-walled tyre could return from the margins and shape the race. If the answer changes after ten laps, the winning team may be the one that reacts first.

Montreal often produces Safety Cars, late drama and unusual strategy. This forecast adds another layer.
