Mercedes says its Brackley Formula 1 factory used less energy in 2024, even as the team continued to grow.

The update matters because modern F1 performance is no longer only built at the circuit. It is also shaped inside factories, machine shops, design offices and supply chains.

Mercedes has published new details on how it is trying to reduce resource use at its UK base. The team says overall energy consumption at Brackley fell by 1% in 2024 compared with its 2022 baseline.

That headline number looks modest. The more useful figure sits underneath it. Mercedes says energy use per person has dropped by 17% in kWh per head since 2022.

That tells a clearer story. The operation has grown, but the team says its energy use has not risen at the same pace. In simple terms, Brackley is trying to get more work done for less energy per employee.

For an F1 team, that is not easy. A front-running factory runs with the urgency of a race weekend almost every week of the year. Parts are designed, simulated, machined, tested, rejected and remade at high speed.

The push sits inside Mercedes’ broader responsible resource consumption programme. The team links it to everyday decisions rather than one-off projects.

That is important in racing. Sustainability gains can disappear quickly if they depend only on headline gestures. In F1, the real burden often sits in routine processes, repeat manufacturing and constant development.

Mercedes lists several long-term projects behind the energy reduction. These include heat recovery around autoclaves, replacement of older lighting and HVAC systems, and real-time performance monitoring.

Autoclaves are large pressure vessels used to cure carbon fibre parts. In an F1 context, they are central to producing lightweight components. They also demand significant heat and energy.

Recovering heat around that process can reduce waste. It does not change the ambition of the race car. It changes how efficiently the factory supports that ambition.

HVAC means heating, ventilation and air conditioning. In a technical building, those systems do more than keep people comfortable. They help control temperature and conditions for precision work.

Replacing older systems can cut energy demand without touching car performance. That is the type of factory gain teams increasingly need as they try to balance growth, cost control and public scrutiny.

Mercedes has also installed more than 550 energy sub-meters at Brackley. These allow the team to monitor energy use by area and machine in near real time.

That is a significant operational change. A factory-wide electricity bill tells managers very little. Machine-level and area-level data can show which processes run when they do not need to.

The team says a pilot project in its Aero Machine Shop cut baseload energy use by 30%. Baseload is the energy consumed even when a department is not at full production.

Mercedes says the reduction came through data-led changes. These included enforced hibernation modes and smarter scheduling.

That sounds mundane, but it speaks directly to how F1 factories operate. A machine left ready, idle or powered unnecessarily still consumes energy. Multiply that across a large technical campus and the waste becomes meaningful.

The team now plans to scale the approach across the factory. Department representatives are working with the sustainability team to find further savings.

This is where F1’s data culture becomes useful away from lap time. Teams already measure tiny changes in airflow, tyre temperature and vehicle balance. The same mindset can be applied to energy, waste and production flow.

Mercedes also reported a drop in waste. The team says total waste fell by 14% in 2024 compared with 2023.

It credits improved recycling behaviour and a dedicated operative who sorts waste streams. That means materials are separated more carefully so they can go to the right next use.

The team does add a note of caution. Waste can fluctuate in a fast-moving research and development environment.

That caveat is realistic. F1 factories do not produce identical items on a simple production line. They create experimental parts, development pieces and short-run components under constant time pressure.

Some ideas work. Others get changed quickly. That is part of racing. It can also create scrap, rework and awkward material streams.

Mercedes says it is focusing on long-term progress through team education and supplier collaboration. That points to a wider issue than bins inside Brackley.

An F1 car is not just made by the team. It relies on a network of suppliers, specialist manufacturers and material partners. If design tolerances or schedules create avoidable waste, the impact can sit outside the headline factory number.

Mercedes says it has reduced scrap waste from its supply chain by 3% year-on-year since 2022. It links that improvement to closer collaboration, better planning and a stronger focus on right-first-time quality.

Right-first-time quality means making a part correctly the first time, with fewer mistakes and less rework. In racing, that saves time. It also saves material.

This has competitive relevance. Under F1’s cost cap era, wasted manufacturing effort carries a sporting penalty as well as an environmental one.

The cost cap limits how much teams can spend on performance-related activity. If a team wastes material, labour or machine time, that can reduce room for useful development elsewhere.

So efficiency is not only a sustainability story. It can also support performance discipline.

Mercedes also highlighted kit circularity, a less technical but highly visible F1 problem. Team clothing changes regularly because sponsor line-ups and branding change.

That creates thousands of branded items across race team, factory staff and support operations. When designs change, old kit can become difficult to use in public-facing roles.

At the end of the 2024 season, Mercedes sorted surplus kit and sent it towards what it calls the best available next use. The team says the process is continuing in 2025.

The identified routes so far include 1,020 kg recycled, 420 kg donated to charities and 221 kg incinerated for energy recovery.

The detail matters because kit waste is easy for fans to understand. Every F1 season brings new colours, sponsor panels and teamwear drops. That commercial churn has a physical cost.

Donation is the cleanest public-facing route when suitable. Recycling is harder but valuable when clothing cannot be reused as clothing. Energy recovery is lower down the preference order, but still captures value from material that might otherwise be discarded.

Mercedes is also redeveloping its Brackley factory. The team says the project is designed to optimise resource consumption.

It plans to use reusable and recyclable materials where possible in the build. It also says the new buildings will support targets for energy, water and waste.

Factory redevelopment is a major moment for any F1 team. It shapes how departments work, how fast parts move, and how efficiently people can collaborate.

For Mercedes, the timing is especially relevant. The team is rebuilding its competitive level in an era of tight margins, budget controls and increasingly visible environmental commitments.

The lesson from this update is not that Mercedes has solved F1’s resource problem. The numbers are progress markers, not a finish line.

A 1% total energy reduction shows how difficult the challenge is when a racing organisation keeps expanding. The 17% per-person drop suggests the deeper operational work is having more effect.

The waste and kit figures also show the awkward truth of modern motorsport. F1 is a high-speed development contest, and that contest consumes material.

The most credible response is measurement, reduction and better routing of what remains. Mercedes is presenting its Brackley work in those terms.
