Formula 1 drivers expect a messy Canadian Grand Prix if rain arrives in Montreal on race day.

That is the clear message from the paddock before the 70-lap race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The concern is not simply that the track may be wet. Drivers are worried because this would be the first proper wet race under the current generation of F1 cars and tyres.

The confirmed picture is straightforward. The race is due to run over 70 laps in Montreal. Drivers are preparing for colder conditions, rain tyres or intermediates, and a circuit that already makes tyre warm-up difficult in the dry.

The uncertainty sits underneath that. Several drivers say they have little or no real wet-running experience with these cars. That makes the opening laps especially important, and potentially chaotic.

Cold Tyres, Cold Track

The biggest issue is tyre temperature.

In F1, a tyre only works properly inside a narrow heat range. Too cold, and it slides. Too hot, and it loses grip or wears quickly. In the wet, the problem becomes harder because water cools the tyre and reduces grip at the same time.

Montreal adds another complication. The circuit has long straights, heavy braking zones and slow corners. That layout can cool tyres between corners, especially when rain lowers track temperature.

Kimi Antonelli pointed to that exact problem. His view was that rain and colder weather will make grip very low, and that the first drivers to bring the tyres alive could gain quickly.

Lando Norris also framed the issue around tyre warm-up. He said it is already difficult to switch on a soft dry tyre, so doing the same with intermediates or wets in colder conditions could be far tougher.

Max Verstappen shared a similar concern. His point was simple: if the wet tyres stay too cold, every driver will struggle. In those conditions, car balance matters less than basic grip.

That is why this race could punish even small mistakes. A driver who brakes slightly too late may not just lose a tenth. They may slide wide, damage a wing, or trigger a safety car.

The Tyre Debate

The driver reaction also shows a wider concern about the wet-weather tyre package.

Lewis Hamilton said the wet tyres have not worked well enough in recent running. He linked the issue to blanket temperatures, which are used to pre-heat tyres before they go on the car. Lower blanket temperatures make tyres harder to bring into their working range once the car leaves the pits.

Hamilton said he had pushed for higher blanket temperatures and for blankets on extreme wet tyres after testing. He acknowledged changes had been made, but still felt the tyres remained short of what drivers need.

Carlos Sainz also spoke about the lack of experience on intermediates and wets under these regulations. He referenced feedback from Pierre Gasly after wet testing at Magny-Cours, including complaints about tyre warm-up and aquaplaning.

Aquaplaning happens when a tyre rides on top of standing water instead of cutting through it. When that happens, the driver can lose steering or braking control almost instantly.

Gasly’s own comments backed up the caution. He said warming the tyres in the dry is already difficult, and that wet running could turn the race into an eventful one. His key priority was reaching the chequered flag.

That is not dramatic language from drivers chasing headlines. It reflects a genuine technical concern. If the tyres do not generate heat quickly enough, the race becomes less about pure pace and more about survival.

Power Delivery Adds Risk

The second major concern is the power unit.

Modern F1 cars recover and deploy electrical energy as part of their hybrid systems. In simple terms, the car harvests energy under braking and sends it back to the rear wheels later for extra power.

In dry conditions, drivers and engineers can map that deployment with more confidence. In the rain, wheelspin, missed apexes and inconsistent traction make the system harder to manage.

Oscar Piastri said these power units do not like inconsistent driving, and rain naturally creates inconsistency. His concern was that energy deployment could create lap-time losses across the grid.

Fernando Alonso also highlighted the same area. He said the deployment can feel random, and added that gearbox behaviour and low grip will make finishing the race a challenge.

Sergio Perez went further. He warned that engines kicking in on the straight could create a messy situation, especially if the intermediate tyre remains too hard to warm.

For fans, this matters because it affects overtaking and defending. If one car gets a strong burst of electrical power while another struggles for traction, closing speeds can rise quickly. In wet spray, that becomes a safety issue as much as a racing issue.

Visibility And Race Control

Visibility could shape how the race starts and restarts.

Wet F1 races often produce heavy spray behind each car. The driver behind may see only a grey wall, especially on straights. That makes braking points and accident avoidance much harder.

Alonso said visibility will be a concern, but also noted that the FIA has usually been conservative with wet starts, safety-car running and restart timing.

Sainz also urged patience from media and fans if race control takes a cautious approach. His point was that these cars, tyres and wet conditions have not been fully proven together in a race setting.

That creates a tricky balance. Fans want racing. Drivers want clear enough conditions to race properly. Race control must decide when the track is wet but acceptable, and when spray or standing water makes it unsafe.

A full safety car can keep speeds too low for tyre temperature. A virtual safety car allows controlled running, but with more speed in some areas. Verstappen suggested that distinction could matter if drivers need speed to keep tyre heat in the car.

Opportunity In The Mess

Not every driver sees only danger.

George Russell said he enjoys wet racing and sees opportunity, even while admitting it will not be easy. He also noted that those starting near the front are in the best place to manage the first phase.

Oliver Bearman said rain could open chances. Arvid Lindblad said previous wet running at Suzuka may help, but still expected many unknowns.

Gabriel Bortoleto was blunt. He said he did not know what to expect because he had not driven these cars in the wet. Fernando Alonso said his team also had everything to discover.

That mix of excitement and caution is exactly why wet races grip fans. A slower car can jump forward if its driver reads the grip first. A front-runner can lose everything with one cold-tyre snap.

For Ferrari, Hamilton’s feedback will matter, while Charles Leclerc will also need to respond quickly to changing grip if conditions shift during the race. McLaren’s Norris and Piastri have both sounded alert to the tyre and power-unit risks. Verstappen’s comments suggest Red Bull expects no easy answer if the tyres stay cold.

The race could therefore become less predictable than a normal dry Canadian Grand Prix. Strategy may depend on when rain falls, how quickly intermediates warm, and whether safety cars interrupt the tyre cycle.

The central fact remains this: drivers are not warning about a normal wet race. They are warning about a wet race with limited shared knowledge, difficult tyres, cold conditions and hybrid systems that may behave differently from lap to lap.

If the rain arrives, Montreal may not reward the fastest car alone. It may reward the driver who stays calm while everyone else searches for grip.
